Alice C (アリス, Arisu) is the first person Haruhiro encounters in the world of Parano.

Alice's gender is unknown as while their face looks female, they speak like a man, and more importantly, unlike all other characters, the author never used pronouns for Alice always using "Alice" instead[1].

Appearance[]

Alice is described as pretty with a petite stature. They appear to have some form of albinism.

Alice is about 162 cm tall, has thin shoulders, small head. The color of Alice's eyes is red, similar to that of arterial blood. Their hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes are pale white, their skin is also so white that it seems translucent.

Haruhiro compared Alice with Lilia in a way, how both of them give off an aura of otherworldly beauty.

Personality[]

Alice describes themselves as "kind at times, and cruel at others".

Probably because of the bullying when they were a child and the harsh nature of Parano, Alice is cold toward those she doesn't know and act thought. Yet they were willing to save a stranger like Haruhiro 2 times in a row and then provide him basic information and help, showing that it most likely just a front.

Once they're warm up to someone they become more friendly and rather talkative.

Plot[]

Before Parano[]

Prior to coming to Parano, Alice lived in another world. Though unconfirmed, it could be the same world, Haruhiro came from.

Alice had always been bullied harshly (apparently because of their appearance) and called "Alice", even though it isn't their real name. For Alice, this bullying left a big never-fading wound and was the reason behind developing the cruel side of their personality.

One day they went with some of her friends exploring a nearby cave and they eventually wandered into Parano.

Before Level. 13[]

Before meeting Haruhiro, Alice has spent a considerable amount of time in Parano. They gained a good grasp of how everything in Parano is working, became a strong Philia magic-user by obtaining a lot of Id, apparently worsened their relationship with other inmates in Parano and made Ruins No.6 their hideout.

They once tried to build a clock to measure time in Parano, since there's no sun they tried to build a water clock but they had to work out so many problems that the system (still not working) end up the size of a tower, frustrated they smatched it.

Level 13[]

Alice meets Haruhiro when they save him from the dream monster that had been created when he fell asleep not long after arriving in Parano. Despite acting to save him from that monster, Alice at first, acts rather coldly toward Haruhiro, ignoring him, refusing to answer his questions, and acting like he is a nuisance. That said, they do give him a facemask as protection from Parano's wind, end up answering some questions albeit reluctantly, and allow Haruhiro to follow them to their home in Ruine n°6. Finally, Alice seems to accept Haruhiro as a companion after they save him a second time (this time from the mental attack of a Dazzler) and act more friendly thereafter.

As they reach Ruin n°6, Haruhiro and Alice come across Ahiru who asks her to come back to the King and taunt them saying that Alice should eat Haruhiro if they really wish to become more powerful. Shortly after that Ahiru leaves but not before using his magic to destroy the whole ruin. Being inside the ruin Haruhiro and Alice try to escape but the former still not use Parano influence end up losing hope, and Alice has to come back and save him a third time by using her magic to shield both of them from the falling rubble. They then manage to console Haruhiro whose mental health has been seriously damaged by Parano, showing the kind side of their personality.

After the rubble stop falling, they leave the ruin and journey to the tower of heaven Haruhiro telling them his story along the way and Alice educating him some more on Parano. After ascending the tower to find their way they then depart for Ruin n°2, Bayard Garden, the home of the trickster Haname.

Once in the garden, Haruhiro decides to go his way to find his lost teammate (probably by searching from the tower of heaven), but before he is able to even leave the garden, he is attacked by Kejiman now transformed into a half-monster. And while Alice easily dispatches the half-monster, the garden still suffers some damage from the fight causing Hamane wrath, which manifests as a tornado. This prompts Alice to once again protect Haruhiro, shielding both of them within their shovel. It's during that time that they realize the nature of Haruhiro's magic: Resonance the 4th and rarest type of magic which lets the user strengthen other people's magic. After that discovery, Alice decides to help Haruhiro in his search in exchange for his help.

Level. 14[]

At the start of that volume, sometime after the incident in Bayard Garden, Haruhiro and Alice are in the Scarlet Forest with the goal of traversing it to reach ruin n°1, The King's castle. However, they're quickly attacked by one of the powerful dream-monsters who lives in the forest, this one taking the form of a gigantic baby. Thankfully by strengthening Alice's phyla with Haruhiro's resonance, they are able to completely shield themselves from the monster attack, who frustrated end up throwing them away.

After a relatively long flight, they crash in one of the buildings of Ruin n°3, Doll Town, home to the trickster Nui. They're quickly discovered by a doll and flee the house, while on the run Alice explains that Nui used to be their friend before she became a Trickster. Not long after they come across the Doll Master herself, at first Alice tries to speak to her, while dolls from all over town are coming their way. Realizing that they can't communicate with Nui, Alice decides to fight and after a short confrontation, they're able to bury her under rubble, buying them enough time to flee the town.

After the incident in Doll Town, Haruhiro and Alice take the direction of Ruin°5, despite its name there is however no rubble there as they have all been used to create countless statues of one woman, and at the top of the hill the ruin is on, next to the best of the statue, is the sculptor: Ahiru. Intrigued by why Ahiru would destroy their home (ruin n° 2) when they know his home and angry at the way he cowers before the king Alice confront Ahiru before starting to destroy some of the statues. The destruction of the statues and Alice calling out his behavior seems to push Ahiru over the edge as he decides to stop working with the King and help Alice, they accept, asking him to act as a spy.

After dealing with Ahiru, Haruhiro and Alice go to Ruin n°7, there too, nothing remains of the city which once stood there instead the place is full of tunnel entrances making it look like a beehive. After monitoring the place from afar for a bit, Alice is able to confirm that the tunnels are connected to Ruin n°1 (the King's castle) and that the King as a shadow following the Ahiru as he comes back from the castle using the tunnels.

As they're about to live having check Ahiru's situation, Haruhiro notices four other persons coming out of the tunnel and quickly recognizes that one of them is Kuzaku. While Haruhiro wants to immediately reunite with Kuzaku, Alice opposes it as shadows are watching and they have to rendezvous with Ahiru at the Tower of Heaven. Hoping that Ahiru will have info on Kuzaku's situation and the strangers with him, Haruhiro finally accepts to wait before being reunited.

Once before the maze at the foot of the tower, Alice explains that they have chosen the tower as a meeting place since for some reason the King's shadows can't enter the maze making it a pretty safe place for a meeting. However, as they are climbing the tower they realize that another danger is coming for them: Nui and her dolls. After a short argument, Haruhiro manages to convince Alice to let him try something which could maybe transform Nui back into a human. But to do that he need Alice to act as a distraction for him to sneak up on Nui and use Resonance.

After a short fight, their plan work, and Haruhiro is able to use Resonance to peer into Nui's mind but isn't able to bring her back as she died during the operation, supposedly killing herself. They then move her body near the rusted man where he corpse can rust in a good position, once done they take some time morn her, Alice finally quickly thanking Haruhiro before restarting their ascension of the tower.

Level. 15[]

From their absence when Team Haruhiro, Team Io, and Hiyomu awaken within the forbidden tower it can be deducted that Alice and Reon (the King) were the 2 people Leslie kidnaped for his works.

Abilities[]

Alice is a very strong Philia magic-user. Alice's fetish item is a shovel. When enhanced by Haruhiro's Resonance magic, Alice's shovel becomes a tent-like shield capable of covering two people in close proximity. The shovel's outside or skin splits into strands revealing a meat-like stick. The strands form a basket and continue to weave together until there are no more gaps.

Relationships[]

Nui[]

To Nui Alice is everything she ever wanted to be: beautiful and unique, As such Nui arbor a mix of envy and love for Alice. Those feeling are what pushed Nui to do everything she could to get closer to Alice, and made her more and more possessive of them, leading to Nui stalking and making preparation to blackmail Alice if she ever needs to. It's also important to note that the love Nui as for Alice isn't romantic but closer to a form of fascination, in fact, if Nui "says" that if she could become Alice by killing them she would have done it, but since it's impossible she is trying to be as close as possible instead.

For their part, Alice is aware of Nui's feelings, even knowing that Nui wishes to be them, but they accept it and don't reject Nui. When Nui dies they act in an unusually caring way toward her showing that they did like Nui. Before Parano it seems like they would regularly be harsh on Nui though, but Nui would never retaliate in fear of having Alice distance themselves from her.

Being separated from Alice seems to have been what triggered Nui to become a trickster.
